Propane is a practical and safe source of energy, provided that certain basic safety rules are followed. It is important to know the properties of this gas and to ensure that the installation of appliances which require it are adequate.

The tips that follow are intended to prevent accidents, thereby allowing you to make the most of your leisure time.
Propane is a portable energy source. It allows you to heat, light, cook and chill anywhere you may be (at home, camping or cottage).

At home, it is used for many more purposes than the barbeque.

It requires a large amount of air for combustion
It is heavier than air

It is flammable when its concentration in the air is between 2.4% and 9.5%

It is not toxic in itself, but poor combustion can produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal

Propane is colorless and odorless. For safety, an odorant is added to detect its presence in case of leakage. It is contained in pressurized containers that store a large amount of energy; propane is part liquid and part gas. The pressure inside the container increases significantly when the temperature rises.

AN ODOR OF GAS?

A propane appliance or installation that produces an odor may indicate a gas leak, inadequate ventilation, poor combustion or the improper disposal of combustion products, or simply a tank that is almost empty.

First of all, check the level of propane in your tank (see the gauge under the lid). If you notice that there is no longer any gas, contact us for a delivery. If you are not lacking gas, you should promptly:
Evacuate the area where the appliance is located;
Close the gas supply at the tank (valve under the lid);
Ensure the adequate ventilation of the premises;
Contact us or any other person with a certificate of qualifications in propane gas.

Avoided at this time
the use of certain light sources such as flashlights, matches, candles, etc.;
operating an electrical switch;
smoking.

MINIMUM ALLOWABLE DISTANCE (using the standard CAN/CSA-B149.2-05 code on the storage and handling of propane) BETWEEN A BOTTLE OR A TANK WITH A CAPACITY EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN 125 U.S. gallons (475 liters):
3 ft. (1 m) from a building opening (door frame, basement foundation, window);
3 ft. (1 m) from an electricity meter;
3 ft. (1 m) from the exit flue of a gas appliance;
10 ft. (3m) from a source of ignition (electrical outlets, air conditioner (compressor), heat pump, air intake for an appliance with direct or mechanical ventilation);
No minimum distance is required between the tank and a property line (see municipal regulation), another tank or the wall of a building without an opening.
